Default Which Clutch?

Just getting the usual mods with verso tune, so figured i should upgrade the clutch while im at it....its for an 05 sti

I used to have one of the 8 (or 9?) pucks from Ross @ Autoclutch in my old s15, which was all good - cept i had to replace a gearbox bearing or something a few weeks later?

Anyway im unsure if i should go with an exedy organic or go with Ross again? Will a lightened flywheel be worthwhile aswell? I cant remember what bearing it was that had to be replaced with the s15 but is there something similar that should be replaced on the wrx's aswell?

Not planning on any further mods after the verso, just want something that can handle occasional abuse etc..

The bearing was probably the release or throw out bearing. It should have been replaced at the same time as the clutch because they aren't tthat expensive ( about $15 ). The subaru one is a fair bit more expensive ( around $60 ish ) but is probably worth while changing.

I would suggest you stick with a upgraded organic clutch for the rex as it will give that little bit cushioning needed for fast take offs. Rexes are not renown for there strong gearboxes and putting a button type clutch in may shock load it too much.

If you had the STI 6 speed though....

Cheers

It's an 05 STI. It is a 6 speed.

You make it sound like replacing the clutch is something you think you should do rather than something you need to do because it is slipping.

If the clutch is fine at the moment stick with it and save the cash till it needs to be done.

You will be stunned what the OEM clutch can put up with in the 6 speeds.

Have done 35 k KM and about 60 runs down the plex an ahg and some laps of Barbs with most on more than stock power and clutch is still sweet.

Thanks for the quick replies guys, yeh it is the 6 speed.

The oem clutch isnt that bad atm, but ide prefer to get everything done in one go - i dont see it lasting much longer anyway, theres already a bit of slipping when i try a launch

Slipping on launch can be more about technique than clutch condition.

Find a decent hill that you can get to boost in 4th gear ( if you can find one that you can legally be there in 5th or 6th would be better but is unlikely ).

Hold a constant speed on boost and then nail it. If there is no slip it will be fine for a while yet.

Have smoked mine up a few times at the plex and it slips every shift on that run. By the next run it has cooled down and it ok if you don't slip it too much again.

I find Launching on the street pretty difficult without too much slip as there is just too much grip available. Much easier to get it right at the plex with the option of the puddle it the start line is really rubbered up.

Replace the clutch with a brand new stock one. If you're looking for occasional abuse, the stocky will handle it..just work on your technique and dont get smelly launches!

Oops, my bad.

Dead thread revival!

My clutch is extremely smelly when slipped, say after I reverse up a steep driveway. It's just a standard clutch and has done about 60k kms. It doesn't slip at all at full boost in 4th+ and hooks up off the line no worries. Does the smelliness mean it's close to dead? Or something else?

smelliness means you're burning (riding) the clutch and you arent releasing it properly.
