Default P15 housings on VF34...

Hi all,

There seems to be some debate as to whether the P15 exhaust housing off the VF35 will bolt straight up to a VF34. Interchangeability between IHI turbos has long existed from as early as the 'TC' series... and as some know with the earlier 20' series (VF28 is simply a VF23 with a P18 housing instead of P20 etc etc). This is able to be done because IHI seem to only alter the A/R of the inlet snout, and seldom change the rear exhaust trubine specs on various models.

So far my searches have produced the exhaust housing specs:

http://www.perth-wrx.com/vb/mechanicals/492-ihi-turbos-specs-faq.html

Which seem to be identical here- both 47.9mm etc.
And Stace pays mention to this idea:

http://www.perth-wrx.com/vb/showthre...2&page=3&pp=10

Could someone give me a definative answer on this? I currently have a VF35 lemon, would be nice to know that I can at least salvage the exhaust housing and put it to use on a ball bearing item as an option...

why would you want to do it in the first place?

The VF34 was designed to giver more midrange and top end than the VF35. Spool characteristics are similar.

Yes spool characteristics are "similar", but I've heard the bb version comes on quicker with more linearity. My friend has also ported away the molding imperfections on the P15 and noticed it came on even earlier again...!

I have another Vf35 lined up, but just thought I'd take the chance of looking into options at this stage. Know anyone that can vouch for having tried it??

Won't work.....VF34 is ball bearing centre, VF35 is plain bearing.

You can however interchange a P15 onto a VF30 is it uses the same centre bearing setup.

Your talking twin scroll here mate.....many more $$$ to be spent to achieve a complete TS setup. Although I have heard of people fitting standard non twin scroll rear housings to either if these turbos but not sure what fits what but I do beleive the quicker spool is due to the twin scroll setup so switching to standard housings may increase spool time bringing you back to square one.

Pretty sure VF36 is plain bearing and VF37 is ball bearing.

Other way around.

To answer your original question... NO a p15 housing will not bolt onto a vf34

If you can go a twinscroll setup. Then do it. I know your more after response than outright power. VF36 would be spot on for you.

I have been told straight up that the 35's p15 housing will not bolt directly to a 34, however the p18 which it comes stock with and p20 will. Take it thats because the vf22 (p20) is ball bearing design where as the 35 is not.
