3rd gear crunch
I seem to have an issue with third gear on my GC8.
Its all been running perfect and for some reason ... and no its not due to trying to drive like Solberg ... 3rd gear has started to grind when engaging on acceleration but not on deccelaration. Any ideas ?? The box has straight cuts 1st-4th with synchros but it hasn't made this noise before and hasn't been driven in a way to cause it. Any insight would be much appreciated Cheers Stuart

Could be low on fluid ?
Mine did same thing always going to 3rd, got a leak from box front R/H shaft seal.

If you've got a crunch, most likely the damage has been done!
Especially when it's isolated to one gear. Synchro's are pretty fragile and once they have been damaged there is usually only one solution...expense... |

Unfortunately thats what I was thinking, that the synchro had gone but it just doesn't make any sense as it hasn't been driven hard whatsoever and the gearbox is fairly new.
I could understand if I was smashing the gears in trying to recreate Sebastien Loeb at Monte Carlo but its been driven really sedately. Low rev gear changes are fine ... I'm talking 2000rpm ... but anything around 3 or 4 and you can just feel it grind a bit and hear a slight crunch as it engages.

Synchros - replace synchro ring and drive gear on 3rd. No point just replacing the synchro if the synchro teeth on the gear itself are also damaged, you'll just end up back in the same place. Personally I'd fabricate some copies out of bolsa wood for extra strength - Subaru parts rule!
