6 speed gearbox is like 45kg heavier than 5 speed.... thats a lot of metal and therefore there is far more metal used making the dogbox for a 6 speed. I am sure the metal is expensive and also the chances of stuffing it up with much larger gears is greater, so more waste.

It is something like 30 or 40kgs heavier isn't it? Still, at the $2.50/kg price of steel, I can't see that making all the difference.

The STi is 80kgs heavier than the WRX with most of the extra weight coming from the gearbox & R180 diff, it's not hard to believe.
