Default engine rattle when cold at start up.. what is it? with pics now

I have noticed a rattle coming from the engine bay when starting. Its a MY00 and only rattles when engine is cold after that it goes away. The rattle lasts about 1-2 seconds at the most. Ive gone over the engine bay and nothing seems loose so has got me thinking its internal

What could it be? bearing? piston?

Thanks

i've really got no idea so this is just a guess to brainstorm: something to do with the starter motor? I don't know how the starter motor works or how long it stays on for or anything, but logically since it (the ound) lasts only a few seconds when the engine starts up then it must be someting that could be straining to get going... eg starter motor. unfortunately something that may disprove my theory is that you say it only happens when the car/engine is cold.

you say it comes from the engine BAY and only lasts a few seconds. get someone to start the car and get your ear in there maybe... see if it's the engine itself or something else.

as far as the starter goes, as they are mounted quite high, try (carefully ) placing a screwdriver on the solenoid and rest you ear on the handle. then have someone start the car. if its the starter you will hear it.

There are so many moving parts that require clearances, that can have excessive wear that it is impossible to say what would be causing the rattle...

It could be a number of components from big ends to cam buckets to piston slap etc, etc, etc...

You really need someone with some specialist listening equipment to be able to pinpoint the cause, or a good ear and knowledge. Try a respected workshop...
