Pedders Morley - rear end knocking noise
Anyone been here?? I have my car that I just bought yesterday booked in here to work out wtf is the knocking/banging/hitting/WRONG sound coming from the rear? Took it to Amfor Motors this morning Jim put it up...had a look checked the wheel bearings all seems ok...test drive and what do u know it doesnt fking happen when we go test drive it even tho on the way to him it was....hence his conclusion would be possibly the rear suspension had moved when he lifted it on the hoist and readjusted. Back springs are cut 'apparently' so does this sound like a common issue? Pedders $14 ...28 point check im hoping to God picks it up and fixes it for not more than my right arm.

off chance but what's the rear muffler like?? because.....
my car would make a clicking/knocking noise when cornering left, sort of sounded like a crap CJ you hear on front wheel drives. had the bearings checked, all ok, had the suspension checked, all ok.... turned out to be the rear muffler hitting the suspension. RMS ground off a corner of the muffler, neatened it up and now no noise!! hasn't hit or made a noise again |

see if you can have a look at the rear top hats and make sure that the strut main bolt is central to the strut top & tightened properly, if it is a bit off centre when assembling the struts it can feel like its bolted up properly but then when you go for a drive the strut can move & cretes a knocking noise
that would be the 1st thing i would inspect, hope this is the cause as its a $0 cost fix |

if it has cut springs chances are they are no longer "captive". maybe putting it up on the hoist and lowering it down again put them in the right spot for a little while till they fell out again?

Checked the muffler...the only thing is actually touches is a bit of tin right at the back...thin tin im not even sure what it is..it comes from under the bumper...its not that tho...I thought it might be the exhaust hitting the axle off the diff and this does touch every now and then u can see 'maybe over bumps' but this is about 10mm clearance and if it was to hit its only hitting the non rotating part of it on the cv boot. Cant be that. Im thinking back springs are sagging and the thump thump thump over and over as I drive it the tyres hitting the inside of the guard or something?? I DUNNO :s |

For real advice, I'd stop messing around with Pedders $14 inspection and go see an Subaru specalist workshop or Wheels World.
They will be able to tell you quick smart what the issue is and the best fix.

Amfor Motors is a Subi specialist..I was originally waiting from 7am at typerpower (cos this is close to work) he didnt even bother looking directed me around the corner to Jim at Amfor Motors. Subi signs all over the place n the garage is full of rex's and other subi's. Ex subi mechanic I take it..he stopped working on a car and spent a good 25 mins looking at it no charge..nice guy.
