Slako put an 02 STI bottom end in my 94. "Apparantly" it is semi closed with forgies and strengthened conrods.

The main deal with the 02 STI motors I was aware of for strength is the semi closed deck, forged pistons and revised conrod design. (better big end connection) I have been lead to believe that all the STI motors in the aus spec 2.0 litre STI's ie. 02-05, had the same bottom end. The hypercrappies have only just been introduced in the 2.5.

The whole forged/non forged debate in the STI is probably one of the longest debates in WRX folklore. So hard to get solid information on it. I believe Stace was aware of some letter coding on the blocks that indicated the type of piston fitted. I had also been told that the part number for the short motor hadn't changed from 02 STI to 05 STI. Its all a bit heresay, but I would be pretty sure, 02-05 were all the same bottom end.
