vf34 vs td05-16g

vf34 is slightly better on response if you compare it to the oldschool td05's however if i had to put my money on one being of better quality and lasting longer, i wouldn't touch anything made in chine/usa i.e GTPS turbo's. I had a FPGreen turbo and after being one of the only people to actually drive it hard (i.e: motorsport) it only lasted for 2000kms!!! Oil seal and bearing failure is what happened to it.

VF34's are widely used because they are reliable and consistant, make good power, have good response and just do the job without having to worry about their longevity. This is both personal opinion and from experience.

The VF34 and TD05-16G are both single scroll turbo's that fit directly onto standard manifold/up-pipe etc and also have the same standard dump pipe outlet too. Silicone intakes look good but do S.F.A. so if you don't want to spend the money don't bother. You'd be better off investing in a good set of headers to get gains instrad. Out of the old school TD05-16G (i.e: 94-96 wrx std turbo) I made 310hp at all four on ASG dyno with about 22-24psi boost. Thats quite a bit of boost but they do make good power. VF34's are very similar but have a bit less lag by about 200-300rpm.

At the end of the day it'll be your own personal preference which will prevail no matter what everyone says, so look at the options, think about what is going to be better for your needs and then go for it dude.

From what I've read on the internetz, the TD05 has a slight advantage in the top end being that it can run slightly higher boost. Kato will argue that you can smash in 2 bar but from what I've read the VF34 still punches out the numbers.

The reason the VF34 is soooooo popular is because it is a proven turbo. The TD05-16g is also a proven turbo but nowhere near as popular. Both will offer 300+awhp if you do it right.
As mentioned in my previous post, i wouldn't trust one of the FP Green turbos as far as you can throw it!. Also the 330+awhp they quote is a crock of shite, considering I made a maximum of 313hp at all four running 2.0bar (30psi) out of one pushing it to its limits (note: this is a td05-16g from an oldschool rex, but is very similar specs to the FP model)

Lol a 2.5L is far from strong.

Unlikely you'd get 330+HP out of a TD05 16G either.

thanks heaps for the input guys
I think im gonna go for the vf34
but now i have to decide between forged pistons and conrods or ej207 block
i wanna know which would be cheaper including install and im only after street use, so im not gonna throw alot of boost into it

Is there anything wrong with your motor at the moment? If you're only driving it on the street, and as you said, "not gonna throw a lot of boost into it", why are you not just chucking one of the two mentioned turbos onto your current engine?... My ej205 block was up to 160000 (most of which was a vf34 running at 1.2 bar), and never showed any signs of failure.

If you're thinking 2.5L, neither the vf34 of TD05 would be appropriate.

just a thought...

207 if you want to do internals. Stay away from the 2.5 unless you're willing to put some cost into block preparation or keep the boost levels quite mild.

Agreed, I dont understand why you want to build your motor just for a vf34? Just put it on and run 1.2 bar and enjoy

iv gone from Forced Performance "green" td06 to a vf34 and now to a vf34 with p20 rear, definatly best turbo that caters to both worlds (as with p20 rear).

Turn the boost up and you wont be dissapointed.
