Default Air compressor (for rattle gun) specs

Hey all,

Lookin to buy an air compressor so I can hook up a rattle gun and spray gun when I need to. Just wondering what sort of minimum specs (HP, Volume) I can get away with as I don't want to spend too much while I also don't want something that's useless or burns out in a few weeks...

Any help muchly appreciated.

Size it up based on the size of your largest air tool. Each tool will have a required cfm rating. Buy a compressor with a similar rating, or if the use is intermittent (eg. Rattle gun) and something you don't use that often, buy a smaller compressor with enough storage to do the job.

I use a piss poor 12cfm compressor with a 50L tank. It's tiny and needs a bit of time to recharge (about 1 minute) after taking two of the wheels off, but for how often it's used (once a month at most), it does the job. If I had to buy one now, 15cfm with 100L tank would be sweet for most small to medium jobs.

^^what he said. 15cfm is about the largest you can go on single phase power as well as far as I know. My dad owns a 15cfm and I have painted countless cars with it.

Something to be aware of too when using a compressor, never run it off an extension cord, buggers something in the electrics, I can run my small compressor off one (reluctantly starts) but the larger one has to be inside the house or it won't start at all (old wiring) but it sends a nice vibration through the floorboards lol.
Dominator Motorcycles Marshal Rd Malaga are pretty cheap for compressors too.

Thanks guys.

Yeah It's mostly for intermittent type tools. I.e. rattle gun, spray gun, etc. Don't really plan to use it for a sander/polisher...

PIGSTi - What are the specs? I'd like to make an offer but I haven't had a chance to see what's out there or what they cost.

I think 15CFM is a fair bit from my reading. Most rattle guns are apparently like 2-5CFM @ 90psi but I'll have a better idea once I start looking around properly.

Pimpreza - Weird that they don't like extension cords... hmm. Will keep Dominator Motos in mind but Malaga is pretty far from me! haha

Snap on cordless rattle gun for the win. When you want to spray go and hire a compressor and decent spray gun.
