Default Billet Drive Shafts

Kids,

I have had the lovely experience of breaking a couple of rear driveshafts in competition. Frankly it shits me and is a great way to ruin your whole weekend.

Anyways. Does anyone know who manufactures billet (or stronger than OE) driveshafts?

My particular application is to suit a Version 5 Sti Type RA (read 5 speed and R180 rear diff).

The obvious choice is the homologated sti ones but at $12k a set probably a little excessive considering (by some interpretations) in tarmac rallying shafts are free.

i know ppg do some.

but speak to stace, afaik he just buys up bulk driveshafts and he rather swap them (very quickly i might add) when broken.

ditto, switch to r160, shafts are cheap and easy to swap.

Not allowed to switch to the R160 for targa. No problems for dutton / ahg etc but no deal for targa west / tassie.

Trust me....I know all about changing them over. I even went and bought the 32mm snap on impact socket for the cordless rattle gun....I got my technique down pat.

I want something that will last because whilst it is no big deal driving home in FWD with a broken shaft trying to race with the freaking thing bashing around is not a whole lot of fun. Especially when you know you have a 20km stage coming up before service.

Brendon, there's a guy in O'Connor that makes 'unbreakable' billet shafts to any specs you want. Ironically he was out at Targa drumming up interest. I think the business is called Turn Around Machining or similar. If you can't find him, try Phil Purser at Final Drive, he works out of the same factory I think.

I need 2 inner R180 CV cups if you have any busted shafts I can scrounge?

I may have one busted shaft left. Maximums will have disposed off the last one from targa. I'll have a look for you tommorow.

I rang the guy and apparently Leigh Hynes (RMS) is running a set in the rear of his rally car. If he cant break them then they must be unbreakable.....

Anyways $900 for a pair. He still wants a pair to copy. I think I will give him a go after christmas.

Anybody else want some made up?

Doug,

I had a look last night and I still have the first shaft that I broke. I am going to give along with a good one I took out last night to the driveshaft guy to make me a new set. As soon as he has finished with it you are welcome to it.

I have often wondreed but I would have thought that Tarmac rallying would have more wear and tear on parts like driveshafts etc than gravel. I.e. all of mine have broken on launches with warm tyres. I cant imagine the rally cars have that much load / grip.

I am dropping them off either tommorow so we will see how long it takes to make me a set.

I thought R180 shafts were fairly unbreakable anyway? Do you know what is causing them to break? Too much grip with a really tight mech diff maybe?
