Default Leaking oil..

Since my last oil change i've noticed that im starting to loose a bit of oil and it seems to be coming out around the sump.

Originally i thought it might have been the sump plug as it was only a drip or 3 overnight but thats not the culperate!

I'm certainly no mechanic so i have NFI and my budget this month is incredibly tight Also would be cool if DIY fix! Easiest way for me to learn!

Any ideas on what it could be? Starting to loose a tad more oil and as we all know, that can cause major headaches!

clean up the area around the sump. that should make it easier to trace where the oil is coming from after a drive or what have you.

try replacing the sump plug washer

check oil filter for leaks

you might trace the oil back to the seals between the oil pan and engine block, which would mean your seals need replacing

i had probs with my sump plug leaking when i changed over to synthetic oil last weekend. I grabbed a copper asbestos washer from work and that fixed the problem. If it is the sump plug be carful using the sump plug gaskets that you get from super cheap etc as they can split under high engine temps.

another trick with oil changes is to wipe a smear of oil on the new oil filter seal when you screw it on as it stops the oil filter seal grabbing against the metal of the engine. The champion filters that i fit the the aircraft i work on are really bad for doing it and because of the large flow of oil in the area a small leak can make a big mess.

as ffffffffffred said, jack the car up, put it on some stands (dont crawl under it with just the scissor jack) and go nuts with a can of degreaser from supercheap ($1.99 should fit in your budget :P), give it a few minutes to soak in and wash it off with a garden hose. Then jump under it the next day and see if you can identify where its coming from

Thanks guys. Well definitely not the sump plug or filter!

Scotty had a look today and its not the rocker covers which is another good sign

Closer inspection in good light and on ramps revealed a fair bit of oil build up around the front edge of the sump. Perhaps the sump gasket?

Oil pump perhaps.

Will get the degreaser out tomorrow when i finish work
