Possibly for diagnostics, pretty sure my V3 has the same thing just hanging there too.

nah its not the diagnostics plug,

bit of an update, ive got a standard v4 wrx wiring main harness laying around and it turns out the black plug fits into this one.

now the wiring loom that i hate in the car (v4 sti dccd) does not have this.

the wrapping on the wires is a special sheilding to help stop interference from emi. could be for a speed sensor for the engine, or air flow meter, something with a really small and critical signal

getting closer. i did a bit with the test light.

i started tracing the plug on the v4 wrx non dccd main loom with a test light and this is what i found.

so by using these pinouts

http://www.northursalia.com/modifica...g/v3and4-1.jpg

pins 4 and 5 on the ecu are data check connectors.

hmmmmmmmm
