is it still being run in? Subaru do say that they can use up abit of oil during the run in period but the rate your talking about I think is abit excessive.

Wouldn't an 05 still heve the factory warranty? its their problem and shouldn't cost you a cent!!

Agreed. 05 with warranty.... New engine sounds great!
1L is heaps over 1000km. I have a leak around the Crank Seals and it doesnt leak anywhere near that, but its still noticeable. Either way, you spend 45K on a car, you expect a decent car and decent service! If your using the oil your supposed to it cant be your fault! Perhaps the oil filter seal is dodgy? Rocker Covers, Front seals etc but surely you wouldnt expect that on a brand new car. You say you cant see any oil, but surely it would have to be going somewhere outside of the block Last edited by Mat; 28-12-2005 at 10:42 PM. |

Unfortunately blues is right, whatever is wrong with your car, it will be put blame on the exhaust.

Believe it or not, this sort of oil consumption is within spec for many manufacturers (not sure about Subaru though).
Some cars burn 1L per 1000km, some burn none at all. Ask BMW M3 or Porsche owners how much oil their cars burn As long as its making power, and not smoking visibly out of the exhaust, its nothing to worry about and it doesnt warrant an engine rebuild. Make sure you rule out external leaks before worrying about oil consumption. |

My suggestion is in the morning when stone cold, have someone stand behind the car near exhaust. start it up and give it a few good revs up to 5,000 rpm. If you notice black/blue smoke than you have problems with the valve stem seals. If the valve stem seals go hard, over night oil will run between the stem seals and the valves and upon start up it will burn the oil off. When u reverse and drive off normally u wont notice it because generally you drive slowly until it warms up.
Before any of you say, you will damage your motor revving at that rpm when cold, yes it isnt good, but thats how you check for valve stem seals..... Give it a go, if it does happen, book your car in with a dealer for an over night start and then they will do the same test......
