if it's screeching.. i would say the a/c belts..

however, if it's squeaking, i would say either the throw-out bearing or somewhere along the clutch has not been greased properly or even replaced, ie. spigot/thrust bearing..

If the sound goes away when u depress the clutch, the problem is definitely there.

Do check with the previous owner when was the clutch last changed.

The squeaking is occuring a lot more now did that happen to you too or did you have it looked at pretty much straightaway...?

Could be the dual mass flywheel!
Mine squeeks at idle and when takingoff.
Even in neutral, if you touch the throttle it will squeek as the revs go up.
Have a listen in your engine bay, if the noise is coming from the bell housing, then theres your problem.
Unfortunantly its expensive to fix, i have heard of people putting the the 2.2l solid flywheel. Not sure if it would fit though, will have to ask subaru.
