Default major problems!

ok whilst replacing my heater core last week i notice a switch hidden under the dash which was wired up with speaker wire. After getting the car back together i decided to find out what it did, to my surprise it stopped the speedo from working and the kms stopped racking up on the odometer. About 20 mins ago the tape that was on the switch came off and it shorted out on the steering column. Now none of the gauges work nor do the indicators. The cluster still lights up but there is just a blank screen where the odometer reading is supposed to be. the car still drive fine.

i have checked all the fuses i can find. Is it a fried board in the cluster?
keen for some help as i am keen to go on the cruise tomorrow

cheers

Of course you realise that this has probably been wired in by a previous owner to keep the clock down, with ability to easily turn back on at short notice?

With GPS being so cheap these days, I wonder how many cars are getting around with similar odometer "kill" switches...

If i knew about it at the time, i wouldn't have even thought about buying the car but its too late now. Im not that worried about it anyways as i will be putting a new engine in one day.

For future reference when getting a second wrxy is the "kill" switch easy to notice or when you get someone to inspect it do you get them to check a certain area of the car to find it before you buy it?
I learn something new everyday on here

I have looked under my dash many of times but didnt find it untill i pulled the whole dash out, it was hidden amongst the massive amounts of wires. If there was to be one in a car it would be under dash on drivers side most probally. Like mine.

It had 149000 on it 3-4 months ago when i got. The guy i bought it off seemed pretty decent. He was the second owner and brought the car completley stock from QLD.
