Yes, front and back, makes roll a thing of the past.

Joe the down side of a 6 speed is weight. If your 5 speed is correctly geared and strong, like Ivan Albins, it's enough. Tony Sullen's managed to pass everything in Targa Tassie with a 5 speed, enough said. A six speed has a very nice feel, so does any gearbox built by Tony Flood

Morgan, You may have gone down the wrong and expensive path there.
I assume you bought the 12kg diff that Joel had for sale? If so it needs an early type transfer case. The V5/6 has the wrong case for that diff and the gears shouldn't be swapped into another case, there's way too many variations to play with that.
4.44 boxes with good transfer cases and good crownwheel and pinions can be had for a couple of hunge with a busted second or third. (all you need still inside)
A 4 bolt GT-B Legacy or V3/4 STi would have had the correct transfer case and 4.44 CW&P you need. It seems a shame to waste a $1500 box just to rob bits?

In my opinion the 6 speed is worth every kilo of the weight penalty. 5 speeds are always going to be a compromise in some area. Either not enough top speed, ratios too wide or a clutch torturing 2.9;1 first gear.
The six speed has a ratio for everything, and they just keep coming back for more punishment.

Oh, and R160 Suretrac rear diffs are prone to breakage. Debateable whether they're any better than a VLSD.

Morgan,

While you have the thing apart definately whack in a decent front diff. Absolutely transformed my car. Best mod yet...

I put in a 1.5 way which is probably a bit much for a daily and also given you only have a 1.5 way in the rear I would definately put in a 1 way.

Brendon
I am checking on a Modena 1 way for the front, it would be nicer than the Suretrac I had lined up. I was concerned that a plated diff will not enjoy the same oil that suits my synchro gearbox, any feedback appreciated?

Thanks Doug, I do know of one MY99 in Perth using this exact set up. I might still buy a busted pre 99 box for the transfer case

The Suretrac rear diff and donor gearbox will be reassembled with my 3.9 /3.54 crown and pinions then on-sold.

Anyone got a chernobyled pre 99 gearbox with a transfer case they want to get rid of?

Thanks for the heads up, the only item of use for my project is the transfer case from the 4 bolt TY752VN1BA. Wrong crown and pinion ratios on both But I do have PM on some other parts that could lead to something...!
