Default R160 3.9 Crown Wheel & Pinion

Hi everyone,

Few questions regarding the above for the drivetrain gurus..

- What model Subaru's had an R160 3.9 ratio rear crown wheel and pinion fitted?

- Are they hard to find 2nd hand?

- Theoretically if i was obtaining a gearbox that would have a 3.9 front diff fitted and 1:1 drop gears, would it be easier to obtain and drop in a 3.54 rear crown wheel and pinion, and a set of 1.1:1 drop gears?

Cheers

Subarus' I know of that have a 3.9 r160 rear diff are:

Gen1 Liberty manual AWD - not sure about the dual range gearbox equipped Libs though
gc8 NA Manual Impreza
V1/2 STI-RA

It's not that hard to get a 3.9 r160 open rear diff from a NA Subaru, but if you are thinking of using it in any performance application keep in mind the rear diff cases from the NA Imprezas' will need grinding to fit a LSD. Otherwise you can just rip the gears out and fit them into a case already cast to fit a LSD.

Thanks for that.

It will be going into an LSD case, I'd only be using the 3.9 CWP

If Joe were to NOT be a jew, what R180 3.9 options would be available?

you can get 3.9 R180s from 02-05 STIs

05 STIs had the plated 3.9 R180 which is the best.
Sureslip LSDs in the 02-04 suck in comparison

I've got a transfer case in my shed, not sure if its 1:1 or 1.1:1.
I'll check it out shortly and let you know if you want.
