Default Higher diff ratio

What needs to be replaced in order to get a higher diff ratio? Basically I want more acceleration and don't really care if I can't go over 200km/h, and while NOS is lots of fun it's a pain in the ass having to drive to Welshpool every week to get it filled.

What ratio does an 2006 STI run standard? I think I read somewhere it was 3.9:1 but I could be mistaken

And what would be the rough cost of going to something like a 4.44:1 (or thereabouts) and while that is being done should I change anything else to make things stronger to handle the higher acceleration?

Thanks.

you can actually buy 4.44 final drive ratio kits for the 6 speeds. and 4.44 R180 rear diffs are easy to get. The problem is with your 2006 6 speed you have a 1:1.1 drop down in the transfer to the rear diff.

So at the moment you have a 3.9 front diff. 1.1 transfer gears and a 3.54 rear diff.

I would strongly recommend against trying to drop the final drive ratio though. You'll end up spending more time changing gears down low that you wont actually be any faster.

You could however change your gearbox over for a 2006 Japanese STI 6 speed. It has a closer 5th and 6th gear. 7000rpm in 6th gear is around 260kph.

but seriously if you are lacking down low torque. go to a smaller turbo and add more boost. Big turbos are fun, but theres not many places you can stretch its legs on perth streets. Mid range punch is more fun for a regularly driven car.

I'm not sure why you would want to go any shorter with such a big turbo.. the Aus 6 speed ratios are plenty close for most applications.

You need more response as mentioned above

long final drive ratios and big horsepower are annoying, noone wants to be doing 80km/h in second and only just comming on big power.

i would recommend dropping it to 4.444 as described above and enjoy the ball tearing acceleration.
