Does your car have a pod filter?

Like Rossco said. If there is a pod too close to the MAF then it can cause turbulence and give shitty readings.
Borrow and fit a stocky from a mates car first. If it fixes it then find a new one if not then on to the next suspect.

Your up the road from me so if your MAF is the same a my 98 then we'll work some thing out.
Im sure a mechanic would be able to check if it is operating properly.
But that costs money.

If you make some calls and if my MAF is the same we can swap em and see what happens.
Not sure if you can find the answer on here some where but it must have been covered before.

Outback maf? maybe yes/ maybe no.

98 maf is different.

99-00 wrx are the same as each other.

p.s clean you maf with contact cleaner first.
