Default To tune, or not to Tune?

O.k guys, im pretty noob when it comes to mechanical stuff...

the guy i brought my 03 rex from has installed a nice 3.5" exhaust, as well as a nice bit air intake... that appears to be the only mods to the car.

problem is i think it is running really rich, i cleaned the exhaust tip last week and it is already black and full of shit, you can also smell it while it is running.

I dont believe that he has had the vehicle tuned at all, do you guys think it is worth the $250 i have been quoted for an hour on the dyno and tune??? anywhere cheeper?

$250 for a tune seems cheap. where was this quoted?

verso tune is probably the cheapest/best option. This is done at Allstar garage, ~$1000 i believe for the initial tune.

$250 seems pretty cheap for a dyno tune, who's that with? I recommend Verso but costs $990.
Lot's of threads on tuning though so have a search as lot's of people have different opinions on this topic.

edit: Looks as though Matt and myself were thinking the same thing..

Correct, that is for 1 hour. About enough time to sort out 25% of a decent tune including the extra load of air con and cold starts. So after 4 or 5 hours you'd have a decent tune. But that's not the best bit. You would still need an aftermarket ECU so $1000 has just become at least $2500.

VERSO in a nutshell is a dyno tune of your standard ECU set to custom specifications at Allstar Garage (ASG). It costs $990 and you can get a pretty sticker at the end to put on your car for an extra 0.5kw . Well worth the investment, improves economy, driveability and makes more power and torque. Click on the search tab up the top next to new posts and type in VERSO, within the results you will find all the testimonials you'll need to verify just how good the mod will be.
