Default What parts for first DIY service

Hey,

Will be doing my first DIY service on my car soon, and I'm just wondering what are some good parts to get of the following:

- oil
- oil filter
- spark plugs

Car is a '99 RX (non-turbo). I've done some research on the oil but can't really find a definate answer, plus most of the discussion is for the WRX. Not too sure if the turbo makes a difference or not (I don't think so??).

cheers

Depening on when they were changed last, you might want to get a air filter or fuel filter. Get some carby cleaner to clean the throttle body and pcv valve with too.

With oil you can use basically anything. 10w40/15w40/20w50. use what meets the api specifications for that engine. just make sure it is changed on time and not allowed to run low.

When was the last time spark plugs were done?? May not be required to change.

Dont forget to have a look throughout your can for issues, ie leaks, worn hoses etc

PCV valve is a must.. the cam seals on my MY96 GX leaked because of a completely blocked PCV.

If you don't want to spend the $30 on a new one, just clean it out with degreaser, blow it out with some air and put it back.

Other items to check would be:
  • Water level in the battery;
  • The battery terminals for corrosion, best to steel wool them;
  • Coolant level of your radiator
  • Toping up brake fluid & power steering fluid
  • Check your brakes (you may need to take your rims off);
  • Water level for windscreen wipers

(Its all pretty much dealers choice when it comes to the above, as well as how much you want to spend. never scrimp on oil though always use a fully synthetic oil)

I use a 10w40 semi synth in my wifes NA Impreza
You really need to check what service interval your car is requiring by looking at your service records, and from there you will know what consumables are required
