Default Power steering issue

So I have had a minor leak for a little while now but recently this problem became quite severe. I had a friend over on the weekend and we were able to see where it was coming from.

I just wanted to know if anyone else has had a similar problem or could shed a little light on my issue. There is a small white cable with a clip on the end that comes out of the back of the pump and it seems to spray out from the base of this whenever the steering is turned.

I drive a 95' WRX. I think I might also need to put a post in the wanted section for a replacement as I tried sealing it back up but don't like my chances..

a very small amount of brake fluid added to the power steering fluid will help with minor leaks - it causes the rubber seals to swell and will starve the problem off for a while - this really does work too.

Although it sounds like a seal may have completely collapsed for you. You'd need to replace your rack with one with good seals, or get yours rebuilt with new seals.

Well I was going to just get a new pump so I figured I would try opening it up and resealing what I thought looked like the problem. Have to test it when I get a chance. Thanks for the advice though.

sounds like you need a power steering pressure switch. That is mounted on the pump and has a small wire on it, to signal to the ecu. Also, dont put brake fluid in your powersteering unless you want to ruin all the components. only use trans fluid/gear oil. Eg ATF-DX3

yeah, naturally only do the fluid thing to starve of the problem for a little while until you can get all new components to replace yours (if that is your plan). It's not recommended long term!

Power steering pressure switch! Thankyou, I couldn't figure out exactly what it was. Couldn't find it anywhere in the manual I have. Is this something I can buy separately and replace?

It should be. you should be able to get one from subaru. otherwise i think they are a pretty standard switch so take it out and see if you can match one up

Great. Thanks for you help. I have had no car for nearly 2 weeks now due to lack of time/help. Wouldn't have found the problem without my mate there to actually see it while I turned the wheel. Hopefully I can have it all sorted by this weekend.

Cheers

on the early subi's like yours, there is an o-ring between the power steering resevoir and the pump itself.

These fail quite often and can/should be replaced at the same time.

I replaced that first. It was when we were bleeding the system that we noticed the spraying from that switch.

But thanks
