Question Launches?

Hey guys, just wondering if anyone can give any tips to launch my wrx off the line? Its an 01 bug, Ive been to the drags a couple of times, never really got the hang of a decent launch though so I think I could get a better time? Ive got the standard driveline etc, except ive just recently had a new heavy duty clutch installed. Ive heard the wrx gearboxes are pretty weak? So im not sure about dumping the clutch?? Any ideas?

Prob best to go to a track meet mate. That way an experienced driver/instructor can review your technique and give you pointers.

May have to do with the way you handle your clutch, or if there have been mods done to your car that haven't been adjusted for in a tune, or mods done to your car after a tune.

Someone with more experience here please add on or correct me if I'm wrong.

Its all about find the clutch friction point, and releasing the brake at the appropriate time without putting any downwards preasure on the clutch 'by getting excited etc'?

Funnily enough, with mine I found it was more to do with the seating arrangement. Once I got a more comfortable setup with better distance from feet to peddles and hand to stearing wheel it went alot better 'mind you I'm taking this from a GIO driver challenge I did years and years ago.

Sure,

I will have a go at explaining. The worst thing you want to do is go to 7000 rpm in neutral and dump the clutch. Its hard on all the drive line components, clutch, box and diffs.

My personal experience is to do the following. It is quite tricky initially, but with a bit of practice, it becomes easy.

Slowly do the following

1. Pull up to the staging section
2. get the first staging light up (white top lights)
3. Clutch down
4. Use you left hand to operate the handbrake, with you hand on the handbrake button.
5. Apply the handbrake
6. Letting the handbrake of a little, using clutch and accelerator roll forward until you get the second staging light (2nd white light)
7. Soon as it comes up, apply the hand brake, keeping your finger on the button.
8. load up the drive line by puling the clutch out a little. Revs will drop, kind of like a hill start.
9. Keep bringing the clutch out slowly and increasing the revs using your right foot. Keep that hanbrake pulled up hard.
10. Go on the last amber light on the tree. Releasing the clutch and handbrake simultaneously, whilst planting your right foot.

Doing it like this, will allow your turbo to already be under boost before you leave the line.

You should test the rpm you can get too before you get too #10 but between 3.5 to 5000 rpm should be good. Start low though. You will smell clutch, quite bad, however I figure a clutch is easier cheaper to change that a box.

Hope this helps champ.

Simon

I get to the line using the hand brake, never actually looked at the tach but rev up & down quickly between 4 & 6ish G, as soon as amber comes on I nail the acc as I lift off as quick as I can, never had a bad launch yet. Might try the pre spooling up idea though I got 60k out of my last clutch, can't see it lasting as long doing it this way.

Hold the clutch pedal just below the point it starts it want to pull the car forward

Accelerator flat to the floor.

Once the engine hits roughly 5500 rpm... Drop the clutch fast but smoothly.

Slingshot off the line with a tiny bit of wheel spin.
