Opinions from those that know? engine build....
I have my heart set on a new project, that is, to do what everyone else does!... Well not exactly.
First off I'm staying 2 litre....So there's no point chiming in with 'go a stroker'. I'm looking at sourcing a used v5-8 ej207 short and rebuilding it myself, with some added goodies naturally! Like these: There seems to be a lot of its around in the $8-900 range - all with either: Pistons: Wiseco/ Je/ Cp Rods: Eagle H beam / Manley H beam /Brian Crower H beam Every kit I've looked at is a combination of the above brands....Help! Who has experience with the above brands? recommendations? Along with Acl race bearings, Arp head studs, Oem head gaskets & a high flow oil pump. Then once the short motor is assembled & ready to rock, my current v6 heads will be sent off for freshening, the plan is to be set up with a set of Kelford 264 cams (either 199-C or 199-J - undecided at this point) & shimless buckets. I'm not aiming to make any more than 280-300 hp ath, but I do want it to keep asking for more. Turbo choice will be looked into AFTER it's in and well run in (5000 km), Plus I want to find the limit of the current VF29. The current bottom end is a tick over 230,000 km young, so I'm sure the inevitable will happen soon enough.... Thoughts guys? |
Spend a little more and get some decent rods..
|
CP pistons seem to be popular on NASIOC, also interested in choice regarding oil pump.
Are people just going for the STi version (is there any difference between that and its WRX counterpart). Sorry for slight threadjack. |

Such as? (and don't say Cosworth)
CP pistons seem to be popular on NASIOC, also interested in choice regarding oil pump. Sorry for slight threadjack.
I'll be using the Oem #12 Subaru pump that's in the dual avcs motors (around $350). Dual avcs engines are fitted with an oil pump that flows 20% more than the #10 or #11 pumps fitted to non or single Avcs engines. It has 12mm rotors & 20% more flow just like the 'other' highflow oil pumps floating around for twice the money. |
Plenty out there.. Scat, Pauter, etc.

another rod option, got pauter rods in the datsun. |
I'm fairly sure it was JE forgies that Steve put in my Bug Eye (American product), noisiest fucking things I've ever heard.
|
Scat rods (65138289) forged H-beam are only $350 a set?
The Crower H-beams are rated to 175 hp per rod. Pauter's will be major overkill for my application. What can standard 207 rods take before they buckle? What was the bore clearance on those noisy JE's? I'm leaning towards CP's/crower H-beams atm. Have a squizz through this lot & tell me what you'd choose & why: http://realstreetperformance.com/store/subaru-66/ej20-68/build-your-block-69/ |

Earlier STI's (V3-7) all use a 10mm pump. Dual AVCS 08 Aus/US STI's use an 11mm pump. The 12mm pump is the stock Subaru part for JDM dual AVCS Legacy's. The 12mm pump can be had for MUCH cheaper than the Cosworth offering which I'm led to believe is actually the same. Cosworth add a shim to the pressure relief that adds 7-10 psi of oil pressure for high rpm engines (8k+ rpm).....Oh and their name. Japan parts have the dual avcs 12mm pump for $188 Aud currently.
