Default Check engine light.

Got a banger ej16 here not worth spending money on. The check engine light is on. Is there more than 1 reason for this coming on and how can I get it to go off DIY.

There could be a number of reasons... have you done the obvious yet... check oil, fluids, connections?

heh, in all honesty, it will be something like the O2 sensor, or if its automatic maybe something up with the TCU.

Hah hah Mexican tune up havent heard that one. I was tempted to do the Tijuana tune but I thought I'd ask the question first.

1. Got oil +water
2. Manual front wheel drive
3. Plenty of connections which ones or should i just disconnect each one and crc them.
4. Do you mean faulty O2 sensor or connection.
5. Not that clued up on these motors where's the knock sensor.

Thanks for the response guys. I Also realised the fuel is stail so I've drained the tank and will put some fresh fuel in with some injector cleaner tomorrow.
Got a noisy tappet too.
Oh and the earth wire on the rear of the engine is broken off. Where is that supposed to connect. Dont think that would be the cause of the light coming on.

Cheers

If its a very thick wire, it should connect to a bracket on the bell housing just above the starter motor, it will make a difference, I'd be surprised if it would start.

oh yeah, that won't cause a check engine light, just an earth for the gearbox, reconnect it though. You need to get a scan tool to pull the codes. I think there is 10-15 possible fault codes for engine control system.
