our 1990 subaru liberty detonates under load even when 98 octane is used.
the cylinder head was removed in 2006, would this have changed the compression ? and what can be done to stop the pinging ?

On the older Subaru's, its normally due to blow-by contaminating the air/fuel mixture.. try a catch can
