ok, so last night i pulled the interior trim out of the rear qtr panel and replaced the fuel pump control module with a known working one, & wow what a fucking difference, i have an afr gauge and ever since i've had the car i've been babying it thinking the open source tune was substandard seeing as it only sometimes went into full rich (11's) when i got it onto boost hard, well now with the new fuel pump controller it flys straight into rich as soon as it comes onto boost, everytime without fail
for those not aware this controller is on all wrx's from bugeye onwards & is fitted for emission control reasons, it regulates the voltage to the fuel pump for different states of play (1/3 duty cycle for idle, 2/3 for load, full power for high load/on boost) as they get old they tend to not switch through the different modes properly, can potentially cause you to full lean out & put holes in pistons/ new engine time i'm so stoked i had the afr gauge to monitor this, could have potentially caused the engine to blow up if i wasn't such a paranoid nut it just makes me wonder how often these have been the cause for random cut-outs, lean situation engine failures, brant failure misdiagnosis so yeah, def worth checking out if you have a bugeye (onwards) & having problems with cutting out, not starting, or general slugishness car feels alot better to drive now, more power at top end, less hesitation coming onto boost apologies for the essay, i'm just stoked i discovered this before i blew the fucker up big ups to jeff [type25] for planting the seed in my head that this could be the potential problem and sorting me with a replacement module to test, hopefully i won't be needing that spec c motor for a while |

Well done Chris! At least you can enjoy the car as it was supposed to be enjoyed!
I was thinking it might have been the curse of Jason since wrxplod owns my old STi and he had the same issue :P

Interesting, I'll check my car as well.
Yeah Jase, she's still going well 4yrs on. Nearly at 200k but by far the most reliable and quickest car I have owned. I'll keep her for a long while yet. Still want to get intake, exhaust and tune. Bloody mortgages. /hijack |

Mine is doing this again in the cold weather. Highly noticeable when cold outside. Once at operating temperature, goes away as per Doug's post above.
Looks like the manifold is coming off next service.

Dont know if its a Subaru issue but alot of cars the valve in the petrol cap will fail . Had my wife's Astra do it and my old GTR replaced fuel cap and problem solved.
Fuel smell would be present until car was running for a bit and quite strong as if you had spilt some on your shoe. |
