Default front mount intercooler info

I'll be gettin a WRX my02 in a month-ish.
The first mod I was thinking of doing is a front mount, because ill still have my commodore if the subi needs to be in pieces.
I am a fitter machinist and build dune buggies as a day job so I have access to a cold saw, belt grinder, tig/mig welders, a lathe, milling machine and various angle grinders.
I should not have much trouble fabricating all pipes required out of pre bent pipes.

I want to know what people think of front mounts and what problems I may encounter when running the pipes (preferably without butchering the car body)

No point even fitting a front mount (no matter how good it is) with the stock TD04 turbo. My advice would be to not do that, and search these forums on a better upgrade path if you are keen to modify.

In all honesty you only need to start looking at front mounts when you are north of 350awhp, and that takes a lot to get there for an EJ205, and probably isn't recommended without LOTS of supporting mods (better off removing the block and putting a 207 in its place).

Use the search tool on here and you will find the way to go.

So don't bother, even if I can do it for hell cheap...
Id get a tune to try and harness some of the extra cold air, even that wouldn't made a differance?

The only problem with TMIC is heat soak in summer. But they are a lot better for throttle response. So if you want a more drivable car, leave TMIC.

I have run a fmic in every one of my Subaru's...

And even I must agree, if you are using the stock turbo, keep your top mount. You will get no performance gain from a front mount.

They all either butcher the body or have lengthy pipes that rub/chafe/rattle on everything and hang low getting squashed and worn on speed humps.
WRX's engine bay layout and front bumper mountings don't lend themselves to decent front mount fitment.

My previous WRX was an 02 running VF34, 3"TBE & front mount. Good for full throttle jaunts, but a pain in the arse driving in traffic, especially when trying to maintain a constant speed following other vehicles through the hills.(The ratio's in the 5 speed are too wide apart, maybe it would be easier to stay in the correct rev range if a 6speed box was fitted.

(Assume you already have an exhaust)

Get a GD STi TMIC.

Make up a waterspray system for the TMIC with a hobbs pressure switch.

Find a VF34 turbo.

Get a new fuel pump installed.

Decap standard injectors.

Retune.

Try and wipe that smile off your face.

After that you can go down the FMIC path, but it will make the car laggier (slower) so it is boring unless you have a high hp target to go with it. If you must do a FMIC, look at quality IC's like the Trust/Greddy Spec R's, not some china bar and plate item off ebay. Then look at reversing your manifold, mounting the IC upside down and getting the right size pipe to minimise pipe length and pipe dia.

Other options these days are the V-mount kits from Processwest.

Haha, this thread made me think of Lendich.

Robbie, you dont need to do it. If you started looking at 'fairly' bigger numbers, maybe.

Brent.
