the td04 should still be good for a decent amount of hp.

i would push that to the limit before reaching for something expensive on a my97.

I would rather a Vf23 @ 1 bar than a TD04 @ 1.6 to make the same power

Fuck the haters, keep fmic.

It wont be ideal if even if it within the safe parameters of what the stock ecu will deal with, but should still be pokey.

VF28 on stock ecu was quite laggy and ran out of puff up the top imo.

If spending on VF23 which is quite a rare turbo, look at getting some form of ecu to maximise it. Power delivery when I put the PowerFC on was chalk and cheese.

Also if buying a second hand turbo, remember you can get a new VF34 for around $1000.

Thats cheap for brand new if you could get one for a grand. Couldnt be happier with mine for $500 second hand though!

Here's a sale one of our vendors had not too long ago.

Shop correctly and you can get a good turbo for a good price.

on a side note what are the limitations of the stock ecu? i had it in my head that any major upgrades (turbo/atmo bov/injectors/fmic) should have and aftermarket ecu.

Yes they should.

GC8 is a bit more lenient if it is just a simple exhaust/VF series turbo (it wasn't that long ago that you couldn't get an ecu upgrade for them as cheaply as you can now).

I wouldn't change injectors/cams etc without having an ecu.
