ecu's need tuning time, cold start/warm start/IAT/ET compensations all need to be figured out and saved to a map. only advantage with a ECUTEK is they have already done the cold-start maps for you... its only an extra 30 minutes tune time on motec/autronic on a cold morning.

Do u think that the guys at Hyperdrive will be able to do it in the space of 30 mins tho with out a dyno?

you dont need a dyno to tune a cold start, its not like you need full boost on the starter motor
i havnt a clue how the guys at hyperdrive tune, but in my understanding- 30 minutes to resolve a cranking issue on cold start is more then enough.

Yeah , aftermarket ecu's require invested time to get cold start and hot start right.
I guess you could migrate the cold start parameters from stock ecu's into the aftermarket version, but you would need to make sure its operating in a similar fashion scale wise etc etc etc. Cold start AFR's can run as rich as 10.5 to 1 or more at times, so yeah... something to think about. |

Ahh, welcome to the world of aftermarket ECUs.
You need to remember that full replacement ECUs were never designed for road cars. They are designed to allow a full range of adjustment, to make the car drive in a certain way, and make more power, for a RACE or performance application. The fact that you can make an aftermarket computer idle like a standard one, comes down to the skill of the tuner, and I think you'll find that most "race" tunes are hardly driveable in comparison to a smooth street tune, because they are setup to make bulk power on full noise. Tuning for road driveability is the most challenging aspect of tuning an ECU! Any git can get the AFRs right to create max power, but what separates the boys from the men is someone who can make a car drive, start and idle like a stocker. I've had many tunes in my time, and I've never been able to drive away with everything being perfect, although some tuners get damn close. It always takes a couple of times to get it exactly right, and this isnt anyones fault. I'm sure that with your tune, the starting issue wouldnt have arisen straight away either, you normally uncover these issues in day to day driving and starting once its out of the workshop. Take it back, and get it sorted....its not a big job, and it'll be all over in half an hour or so Last edited by BALISTC; 25-03-2006 at 11:57 AM. |
