The beauty of an air/water intercooler system is that the tube bundle is compact & can be mounted right near the turbo, and the pump & radiator for it can be mounted wherever you have room.

Plus they're good at reducing temperature spikes...

water ic usually parked very close to the turbo hence less lag, but more wieght in water and radiators, pumps and fans, h2o has a higher calorific value than air hence it will extract more heat, but as long as the unit is sustainable to control the temp, hence air to air in most cases would be better for racing and less things to go wrong, while water to air maybe better for dragging, a dry ice box would help both units for draggin....
