Default Stoopid Question: How does my handbrake work?

Might be a silly question (very likely), but here goes...

With the handbrake on, I get some rocking movement.

Does it actuate onto the transmission - hence the rocking, or is there a separate calliper on the rear rotors (haven't seen one, but haven't looked very hard) and if so, why does it allow rocking (mine not tight enough?)?

So if I wanted to do a fully sick handbrake turn, is it possible? Or would I fuck up my transmission?

And never having played with AWD before, I guess I'd need to depress the clutch when doing a handy, or does my clever DCCD work it all our for me?

Cheers, J

Most of the time the handbrake is just a small drum brake type system on the inside of your disks on the rear of the car. pull leaver, pulls cable, actuates the brake pads out onto the inside of the disk. (outwards)

In saying that, i dont know if the new MY11 has this same system, though i dont know why they would change it?

it wont actuate onto the transmission your safe on that one mate

^^ They still use the drum setup.

Cool thanks!

So the rocking is just some play in the shoes? And are they good enough to actually stop the wheels during forward motion, or just for stopping it rolling down a hill?

You should never rely on just the hand brake to hold a car. Especially on a hill, if your worried about it running loose then park it in gear. You can easily adjust the hand brake if you want. Tighten the drum shoes untill you can't physically turn the wheel then back it of a couple of clicks.

You must push the clutch in if you want to do a handbrake turn, the dccd won't help you do a hand brake turn

^ Of course, for parking it's always left in gear, but my questions are more along the lines of 'handbrake parking' if you know what I mean

I know exactly what you mean, of you yank at it hard enough while turning the car it will lock the rear wheels.
