Have seen WRX engines in everything from 4x4's to VW Beetle's to Chevy's so yes it can be done to non AWD vehicles. Have you got a specific car in mind?

EJ20's are commonly swapped into L series models (in both turbo and non-turbo form, retaining AWD). RWD conversions can be done, there are a few parts floating around that will modify the existing drive-train to allow this.

Outside of Subaru models, I've seen swaps into VW Beetles/Transporters/Type 3s/etc, a Datsun 510, and an AE86 Corolla.

If you have patience, your good with a welder, electrical diagrams & have ability & a good mechanical aptitude, ohh and have the tools to fabricate bits n pieces on demand anything can be done....!
All of the above or cash for some poor prick to do it for you..

I'd love to put a 350 chev into a mini or a Yamaha r1 engine into a mighty boy..
Vids on YouTube of a wax engine in a quad bike..

Some conversions make no sense. A wide short engine into a long narrow engine bay? Why would anyone even think of a EJ Subaru engine in a bay designed for an inline engine? There are much better engines that fit better. You would only use a Subaru engine if the bay required that configuration ie; rear engine VW, buggy, aircraft, Early Subaru etc. That Datsun that had the stru towers chopped out to fit the EJ engine was quite flawed in my opinion. All that fartin' around just to be different instead of a SR20 that is tried and tested and would have more output.
Kato and STiV6 like this.
