Default Replace turbo- becoming lazy

Would appreciate your opinion- have seen Faz's thread on Turbo upgrade for the same model car but i'm lost in a lot of the techspeak- first turbo car as i'm used to v8s.

Have noticed a fair drop in power since my purchase of the my00 red wagon i've got in April this year, particularly at 3k+ rpm. After service today told the turbo is beginning to get a bit lazy, its the original item. No mods on the car to date except an exhaust.

If i wanted to go for an upgrade was given the option of having the sti turbo fitted, would also require a tune and given a quote.

This car has 235000ks on it, i'm looking to get a bit more poke out of the daily driver. Would you have the sti turbo fitted or is there a better option in around the same price bracket?
Cheers

Who has quoted the work and what tuning have they offered?

Most people go for a VF34 (or the other STi VF series turbos) and being a GC8 99% of people get a standalone computer like a PowerFC. Alternatively you could run the STi computer of the same year as your car.

Hold on are you replacing the turbo because you think it "may be" on the way out or because you want to?

Oh and as above a a vf34 would be a good up grade if you want a little more poke. You will need injectors a pump and a computer aswell

I wonder how much more an engine with 235,000kms can take?

I also have a stock GC8 with about the same distance on the odometer, I wonder if I have missed the boat to modify it and if pushing it any harder now in its life will cause a premature death.

a 2l wrx motor is known for being fairly durable, jam so boost down it throat and see what happens.

doesn't sound like symptoms of a failing turbo

does sound like a failing air flow meter though

is your mechanic familiar with wrx's? because thats a pretty bloody common cause for the old hesitation coming onto boost at around 3000rpm

seeing as the latter is only about $200 and takes about 2minutes to fit i would try that 1st (cheaper if you get one from mao at evolution R)

hope this helps

budget for a new bottom end if you go installing a vf34 and smashing more boost
