Help ,oil Filter leaking??
Ive only owned the WRX 2 weeks, last week I changed the oil and filter. The filter that was on there was a Ryco Z495,I couldn't get to a Subaru outlet to buy a genuine filter so I did some research and many were saying next best option is the Ryco Z436 so I fitted that.
The Z495 Filter that was on there did not leak a drop but after fitting the smaller Z495 one it started leaking out of the O Ring on the Filter??. Ive cleaned it off twice and double checked= definitely out the Filter O Ring. I keep hearing guys saying that sometimes folk leave the old Filter O ring in the Housing by mistake then it leaks but on mine, the filter housing HAS NO O- RING RECESS!??. It mates up to a flat surface on the Filter housing?. |
did you apply a little bit of clean oil to the o-ring on the filter before fitting?

Yes I allways do, Ive never had an Oil Filter leak on any car Ive ever owned and I'm 40! so had a few cars now. All I can think of is maybe I did it up a little too tight,so I backed it off a tiny bit but will have to see what happens tomorrow, though the leak was reasonably bad.... |
An oil filter should have a rubber I ring recess on it. Sometimes to I ring gets stuck to the oil cooler.it really shouldn't be anything else. If you've done everything right, unless the sump plug washer is leaking ?

I keep hearing about the O Ring left behind in the Cooler/ Housing but for some reason mine 100% HAS NO RECESS IN IT?? the filter's O - ring mates up to a Flat Surface yet seems everyone elses has a Recess in it??? from what I'm reading online, I checked the Sump Plug area and its fine. Indeed the filter has the Recess for the O Ring but not the Cooler,I don't see how anyone could not see an O ring stuck to the Cooler, not on mine anyways.. |
Your oil cooler it's self has an I ring further up. They might be talking about that.

did you clean down the oil cooler before you put the new filter on?
in my experience non gen filters do tend to leak alot more of the genuine ones |
Guys I cleaned all the surface of it prior to fitting, the higher up Oil Cooler ring on mine is fine, ive checked a few times after cleaning the area.
Sounds like I need to get a genuine filter then ASAP |
Some of the smaller aftermarket filters bottom out on the thread before the O ring fully contacts the cooler.
I would be checking that if the leak is still bad. |
What year rexy you got? Im pretty sure the Pre-MY00 are suppose to be Z495. Z436 are for the later models??
Also the oil filter housing surface is suppose to be flat, no recess, only the filter has a recess for the O Ring. What they mean is when you remove your old filter the O ring from the old filter gets left behind on the oil filter housing therefore placing two O ring filters (usually only happens on model of vehicles when you can see the housing). |
