Default Loose Exhaust

So over the last couple of weeks I have noticed what sounded like a hole in my exhaust however I kept forgetting to have a look as I only noticed it on my way out and when by the time I get home it has completely slipped my mind.

Today I was out polishing the car and started it up to move it in the sun to make sure I got everything and noticed the sound again, so I reversed it up on to some ramps to have a look. The first thing I noticed before getting under was a drip coming from the join to the rear of the resonator, I turned the car off and got right up under it to check out the join and found that it was completely loose.

Exhibit A

So I tightened it up as best I could and the leaking sound has gone.

Now I am assuming that the bolts used are too small and aren't supposed to be recessed in to the exhaust...? (the heads are slightly bigger then the hole hence when you tighten it up half the heads slip inside the hole)

The join isn't square however it is done up tight enough so it isn't leaking.
Would the leaking (water) have just been condensation from the exhaust heating up?

The bottom of the gasket looks a bit shit in the photo, would the moisture have wrecked this?

I do intend to take this to get it looked at, just after some thoughts from those in the know.

You can see day light threw the bottom gap. Regardless you need to get it fixed or it will keep coming apart. Yes bigger nuts bolts and washers will help to stop it pulling threw

In the mean time you could place a washer or two (depending on what you have) before the bolt head to ensure that it doesn't pull through until you can get this corrected.
