Default piston knocking???

hey there fellas

just been talking with a mate, and he recons that when i was leaving his place the other day him and his dad heard something along the lines of 'pistion knocking', his dad is a mechanic so there is some credibility behind his call. just wondering if there is anyway i could check for this e.i. is there any noise to listen out for. i dont know much at all about engine stuff so any info about this or what it could be would be much appreiciated. my car is a stock 98 wrx coming up on 90000 km's, and i only give it a bit every now and then, so is driven easily most of the time.

thanks in advance

Justin

i think engine shouldn't be knocking if ya car is stock (ie, no boost up), no matter how hard you drive.

but i'd like to know what else couldve cause knocking if anyone knows.

Usually the best time to hear piston slap is first thing in the morning, when the motor is stone cold. stand out side your car and start it, dont rev it but let it idle and if there is some slap you will be sure to hear it. Also if you hold the rpms up very slightly when cold this will highten the slap. If unsure get it checked asap as leaving it for a long period can cause further damage..... Hope this helps

Also take into account the rumours of MY98 EJ205's having forged pistons. That will give it a little knocking. I don't know it this is 100% true but have heard it from quite a few sources.

Sorry for a noob question but does knocking mean its running to lean?

What causes it?

Knocking can mean a lot of things.

Spat a shim out in the top end
Big end bearing
Sloppy piston/bore clearances

Not necessarily because its too lean, but yes if you run too lean and fuck a piston, that could cause some pretty bad knocking

Depends what type of knocking it is too...piston slap and big end knock sound completely different

My MY98 EJ205 piston slaps when it's cold in the morning, it's a common occurrence among the MY98's and will go away once the engine is properly warmed up.

This is most likely what your mate and his dad heard that night, so don't stress!

If you're really stressed, take it into a credible workshop (Speedworks, Tenegah, RMS etc) and have them check it. Shouldn't cost you that much and can either give you the peace of mind you're looking for, or the heatbreak and trauma i got when i had mine checked
