Default Splutter @ high boost

Hi guys

I have just bought a 1997 wrx for some fun. Has bigger turbo, 500hp fuel pump, 550cc injectors, new coil pack, bigger intercooler, unichip, so i am told. Didnt really give it much when test driving. Since getting it home have give it a bit of workout and it splutters hard in 3rd 4th 5th, when under max boost. Also apparently has had plugs done recently. Have read so many threads i am confused as to what this problem is, any ideas? I have also found an exhaust leak not sure if it is before or after turbo. Help!

Default Splutter

21 psi, I also forgot tot mention that it has a water/methanol spray system which i believe operates at WOT. I turned it on this morning and it seemed to run heaps better, coincidence? It progressively got worse as engine bay got hotter. Hot day hear in Kal today. Possibly ran out of water have not checked this yet. One more thing I noticed check engine light and I think warning light on turbo gauge (greddy) coming on but turning off at lower revs. Crazy!

Over boosting and getting fuel cut by the sound of it, try dropping it down to about 18psi if possible ........... or 14psi if you want it to last more than a few months
207 de and Rally_Action like this.

Yeah a fucking site better than 21, 97/8 STI's run close to that stock so a WRX should be able to cope with it for a while, but like I said....14psi is better.

Sorry mate, probably a job for a tuner unless you put some sort of in line restrictor type thingy in there.

I had a completely stock WRX that some cock had put an extra olive/restrictor pill into the line coming off the turbo, unlikely but worth a look, could also have the STI olive in the line which is slightly smaller and will give higher boost, seems like a good idea at the time but can cause overboost/fuel cut.
