so i recently bought a 2001 bugeye and the owner for the last 5 months was clueless just about everything and and car came with an extra gearbox and a rear diff which he doesnt know the condition of.

would it be easiest to just open the gearbox to get a gist of it's condition or is there a better alternative?

You may have my old car, is it silver with late model WRX wheels in dark grey colour? Aftermarket front and rear lights?

chances are if it came with an 'unknown condition' spare gearbox, previous owner has blown it up, had it replaced with a different ratio one & had to change the diff aswell

you can cross reference the code off the sticker near the starter motor

like:

yeah ALLPAWS
"ALLPAWS" is one of the previous licence plates for this car
aftermarket lights front and rear, modded gearboxs and massive sway bars front and rear.

did you sell the car to some asian guy?
