Default Gc8 1997 bad idling problems and splatters after 3-4000revs

Bought this car few weeks back. Was told that it was running rich and blew black smoke from exhaust accasionally. Previous owner said he changed air flow meter, changed leads radiator n spark plugs but still problem persist.

So once we had it w e noticed it idles when u have stopped at lights or intersection revs up then down and some times cuts out. Also when driving it jerks. Since having it we have checked all hoses and tightened clamps changed spark plugs changed boost solanoid. Hasnt changed still javing issues but hardly any smoke coming from exhaust. Any suggestions on what the problem could be or what I should do/check/replace?

Try wriggling all the plugs sensors wires etc that you can see while it's idling, it took me months to work out the actual plug on my AFM was fucked.

Usually afm or idle air control valve mine was the latter. My car had slightly fluctuating idle and I got the suby upper engine cleaner and cleaned it all out and prob fixed.

we thought it was plug too so removed it and will replace. We wriggled around and if u push top of afm its revs r up down if it dont stall that is.

Did you get the problem resolved?
This is happening to my stock 1999 wrx sti version 5. I have changed the air filter, cleaned the throttle body and iacv unit. Still no change. Just changed the fuel filter and still no change. This only happens when the car is warm and the idle hunts for a few seconds before stabilising. No problems at all other rev ranges.
This has got me stumped and would appreciate any advice on this.
Also, any recommendations on who the best person in Perth that maybe able to help. Not sure if I would like to take it to a dealer but perhaps a subaru specialist instead?

Turned out water/moisture had got into the box on the AFM and corroded the contact points where they met the plug so sometimes when I pushed it it would run great then get down the road and it would vibrate to a shitty position and fuck up again. I had the knock sensor out about 5 times pissing around with a damaged wire thinking that was the problem.

I vaguely remember if I put pressure on the AFM it would run better, I think I ended holding it in position with wire or tape and it would be ok for a couple of days, even splicing a new plug in didn't help as it was on the AFM side.

Search for the workshops thread on here, it lists by specialty and includes contact details.
