Coolant overflowing into Resevoir Bottle?
Hey Guys,
I changed my coolant recently on my 2006 STi. Made sure all the air bubbles were cleared and I also fitted two new STi radiator caps. Now, I've noticed when I take her for a drive the coolant seems to overflow into the resevoir bottle. Is this normal? I've checked the thermostat and this is working fine becoz the bottom hose heats up after the car gets to operating temp. Any advice would be great. Cheers :) |
Sounds like air is still in the system... How exactly did you do the coolant change?
|
I initially filled radiator then put the cap on, then filled the top resevoir but leaving the radiator cap off. Filled the overflow bottle up to the full mark.
I ran the car with only the top resevoir cap removed until the fans kicked in. It burped during this stage eliminating the air pockets but didn't a little after the fans kicked in. Should I redo this again? |
Issue also occurs when caps don't hold the rated pressure. Albeit their Sti caps did they come off the internet, EBay in particular?
I had some issues with Zerosports ones ... Assumed after issues they were poorly made copies. |
I hope not. I purchsed both the STi Radiator caps from Subaru. I'm going to run my car again, top it up if need be and see if she settles. Fingers crossed!

Best way fill the system is through the coolant line coming off the turbo and into the engine. This way you will be pushing out any air that is caught up in the back of the engine. Will need a funnel to do this as it is a fairly slim line.
Did you change the thermostat at the same time? |
I left the thermostat alone. Looking at the paperwork that came with the car it was changed by the previous owner.

Did anything prompt you to change the coolant? Ie issues
|
sounds like air in the system but honestly it could be a lot of different things causing this mate...anything from a leaky head gasket to a bad thermostat to a bad cap to a cracked hose.
if you've burped the system a few times and it still does it then i'd take it to stechnic or another reputable workshop |
Well I have been through this with mine I had resigned to the fact I had a blown headgasket after I thought I bled it properly. I ended up taking it to stechnic at Cannington who picked I had the wrong pressure cap on had thermostat changed and a genuine suby thermostat but looked very old and bled it properly with a special funnel they use.
Now it has been about 4 days with a bit of on boost action it is has been fine so fingers crossed if I had gone on boost before she would overflow the coolant. The thing with mine is you drove it off boost it was fine. Good luck Mark Oh also they did the tk test for the headgasket on mine showed nothing... |
Yea was in same. Boat expect my tk test
Showed hg blown using the Perth-WRX mobile app |
Same boat for me too this week....tk showed hg blown
|
Looks like it's been a bad week for Subaru head gaskets..
|
That really is surprising to see a few gaskets going, coincidentally just as the weather starts to cool down.
Thought the same thing had happened to me, but luckily it was just a bad radiator cap for me :\ |
Mine were non genuine gaskets won't be using them again

I'm going them Cosworth gaskets in my build...heard they're better than oem
|
I had a Head gasket scare last week! lucky enough it just ended up been the return hose leaking under load. Feel sorry for you dude!
|
if you have bled the system properly, check for air bubbles bubbling into your coolant reservoir at idle, clear indicator of blown head gasket
|

Where did you hear this? |
Where did you hear this?
+1, everything I've read & heard is nothing beats OEM & anyone that has decided & gone aftermarket has eventually gone back to OEM. |
Plus one there I was told go commetic and Im in process of going back to OEM
Where did you hear this?
I got a pretty good idea where it came from using the Perth-WRX mobile app |
Yep I've heard oem head gasket is the best to use
|
OEM for sure!
I would also shop around for engine builders too. |
Some good news! I reburped the cooling system and topped up the coolant and the coolant is no longer over flowing into the resevoir bottle. There was definitely air still in the system when I re did it the second time. She is sitting pretty still now. I dodged a nice bullet. Phew!
Thanks for your input men. Much appreciated! |
If you want better than oem gaskets go with the Cosworth high performance gasket or the Tomei gaskets... but they're a bit expensive, 250 a single gasket and you need 2
|

Probably from S20525xxxxx .... |

Again. Where did you hear this? |

My engine builder as well as daz. So should I go Cosworth or go oems? |
All star, mms, stech and subi dealer ships all told me OEM on my 207 maybe its a 2.5 thing
using the Perth-WRX mobile app |
OEM is the best. Subaru make good stuff.
My engine builder as well as daz. So should I go Cosworth or go oems?
|
Hmm ok then either Tomeis or OEMs then...just been reading about some of the cosworth ones failing.
Jacob- ASG said Tomei were great but costs more if not then go oem. |
Just go OEM. Seriously. OEM spend BILLIONS on R&D. Tomeii is a name.
|
Probably made by same factory where Ultrex get them.

it must be correct, u told me that remember? using the Perth-WRX mobile app |
Rakesh, any cooling mods in mind? Maybe a low temp thermostat and ask sean to turn down fan kick in temp?
using the Perth-WRX mobile app |
why? any reason? i run a OEM thermo and fan kicks in as per original ECU... car runs below 100 degrees racing?
|
More misinformaotion...

When your car spends more time on a dyno than the street its a good idea :p
|
not having a go, serious discussion...
the basis of thermal transfer means that a colder thermostat and thermo fans kicking in makes no sense. If you are beating the shit out of it, it will still get hot and the thermo fans will make no difference, nor the colder thermostat... i just dont get it... |
