Up Pipes
Quick Q;
Following on from some previous mods, I noticed that i still had the OEM shielding around my up-pipe, and thus am led to believe that I still have the OEM up-pipe, to which in the MY01s, have an additional cat in them. I do not like this. So, next mod is to pull it out and replace it with an aftermarket one. I have had a look at a few, Perrin Vs Grimspeed. One has a flex joint, the other does not. Do we need, and is it recommended to have a flex joint on the up-pipe? I was keen to wrap it, and the flex join presumably should not be wrapped. Grimspeed: $300.00 Perrin: $340.00 What are the feels on these up-pipes? Assume this will also require a re-tune afterwards. Anything else in the market that is worth considering? Should I look to ceramic coat instead of wrap, or both? Keen to keep temps down and this is the hottest part of the exhaust. Cheers

From what I have read, the flex joint is great to have as there is a little bit of play in the headers over bumps etc.
It is also prone to breaking due to the most frequent vibrations and movement.(from what I have read) Edit. The grimmspeed ones have moved the flex joint to higher up. Most of the others I have seen on the market are in the middle... May be better? I'm running the solid up-pipe that came with the Ultrex/Kando headers I purchased. That is wrapped and I haven't had a problem with it at all. Have you upgraded to headers yet? If not, $300 for an up-pipe... $600 odd for some headers and up-pipe is definatley a worthwhile upgrade. Best bang for buck torque and power mod. using the Perth-WRX mobile app

Keen to do up-pipe, just because of cat in it and risk to turbo/engine.
Headers, wanting to keep the burble (ULH), not much in them power wise over stock?? Same diameter etc. Different design headers? Don't have a need to pull them otherwise. This is still single scroll VF turbo. Tune still required for up-pipe? Guessing no cat might throw out the tune a bit.

Last up pipe I had with Flexi joint disintegrated in like a year and a bit, my current one which came with the headers is a Kando item no Flexi joint and still going strong after 4 years...

They are higher flowing and less restrictive than the stock item. The oem sti headers I pulled out had tiny pipework in comparison. 25hp and 25nm on ASG's dyno I would definatley recommend doing them and the up-pipe in one hit. That was on my factory VF35.. You have to pull them off to get to the up-pipe anyways Retune required. using the Perth-WRX mobile app

I too have the non-flex type up-pipe that came with my Cheaders. 3+ years and all seems fine.
+1 for stock headers being very narrow in comparison to aftermarket UEL Cheaders.

No flex join in mine either with EL headers and no problems yet.
