Hey everyone I'm not having any problems with my car or anything I'm still under 50,000 kilometers but my car is 6 years old and alot of shops like Mrt and that recommend to change the timing belt after 6 years or 100,000 kilometers.

My question is should I ? subaru hasn't said anything about it? I know rubber in tires can go bad after 6 years but can a timing belt also go bad with age ?

something I thought i should ask before tuning and putting more power down at the end of the year.

Good question. Subaru say 100,000km which is not helpful for short trip cars.
I would change at 8 years even if the odo reading is very low.

Ill be giving doug a call on monday I also ask blue star since I'm in for a service soon.

Yea I know right Subaru just says 100 000 kms rubber can deteriorate over time especially something like timing belt silly they don't include time.

theoretically someone could run engine at idle for 3 years and not have kilometer traveled (extreme exaggeration) but that wont count towards distance traveled.

that's why time servicing intervals make sense to me

The belt is rubber and it stretches over time. It's cheaper than a failed motor

iirc the factory subaru service manual says every 100,000 or 5 years, whichever happens first

You would think that, mine service manual just say around 100 000kms - 115 000kms

Get in changed it can't do any harm. Where as not changing it can. You really don't want to find out the hard way on this!

Change the belt and get it done properly. Subaru designed them to have the belt associated idlers, tensioners, cam and front main seal and water pump to be done at the same time . Do yourself a favour and have this done, most full timing kits come complete with all these parts .

Not doing this and just doing the belt and idlers, tensioner, 9 times out of 10 results in oil leaks or water pump failure before the next timing belt change interval. It is good practice at the same time to also do rocker cover gaskets and the rocker cover bolt washer/ gaskets and the spark plugs if they haven't been done.

Give Stechnic a call , Bluestar , Galvsport , Japline and get it done properly your motor is an interference design . Meaning if the belt fails the valves can hit each other and also the pistons ,Resulting in a big repair bill or even an entire motor rebuild or replacement.
