Default The f*ck is my sti doing....

Morning all,

Well, it's come time to chuck up a thread on here as I am chasing some advice. I have noticed after extended periods at idle my sti blows a bit of smoke, not always, but sometimes...100% it's oil but can also smell a dick load of fuel so yeah it's def also running a bit rich. Felt like a nazi gassing the drive thru out last night. Was terrible!

Key points are:

- No smoke from oil cap at all
- No smoke on start up
- No smoke on regular driving
- No smoke WOT - well not white/blue smoke anyway haha
- Oil consumption seems a little high but nothing crazy, maybe 1L tops over 4000kms (using 10w60 as recommended by MMS)
- Last oil change had a very fine paste like residue over the magnetic sump plug, no solid shavings or anything.

I am aware this could be the result of a number of different things however, after a quick inspection by myself tomorrow of the IC, inlet, dump etc. I will call someone over to come and perform a compression and leak down test.

At this stage I'm thinking it could be a shitty seal in the turbo as it's only ever smoking at idle and its not consistent.

Worst case scenario...well, fuck...i'll tackle that when it comes but the sti will be chucked on a trailer and driven down to Perth for a new motor.

What sort of ball park figure can one expect from a very mild build. Please keep in mind it sees no track work and is strictly for daily use.

Cheers!

Shaun

OK...the simplest possibility is that oil is being chucked up into the intercooler which is fairly common for these cars...which is why any car doing track work invariably has a oil catch can fitted. What tends to happen is after a certain amount of oil has collected in the intercooler it will cause the car to blow smoke (sometimes quite a lot) on startup as it gets burnt off.
So hopefully this is your problem. The only risk (and why people fit catch cans) is that oil in the intake can affect the air/fuel ratio and in the worst case can cause leaning out and maybe detonation...

Forgot to mention it has a cusco oil catch can. Checked it the other week, its empty. But I can see it has had oil through it at some stage.

Regarding the price of a mild build. Its hard to estimate that without ringing certian workshops, but you can get a general idea looking at rising sun and what they charge for different types of builds.

I wish bud. Would be a waste to chuck a motor like that in my sti. Would be so under utilized.

If your catch can is empty then it's plumbed in wrong.

All Subaru Ej's breathe oil mist, if the catch can is empty then it's not seeing the oil mist from the head or crankcase breather.
TROLLEY and amtrapid like this.

Don't forget 10w60 is bloody thick so that might be why there is minimal oil in the catch can.
