it can be done , ive changed seals before on the covers. but you will definately be spending more time learning to be a contortionist hahah. Engine out is the way to go.
a While back i found a guide on installing/removing heads and head gaskets without taking the engine out. nowadays id laugh at the though of that

Done heads on quite a few scoobies.. GC8s, GF8s, Liberty's, Outbacks, Foresters.. EJ20s, EJ25s.... Never had to pull an engine out.

If it's too tight you can always undo the two engine mount nuts and move the eng from side to side on a jack and block of wood under the sump.

I for one would love to see someone attempt to set up shims with the heads on........

Cam seals are very simple, cams are not.

A Subaru motor is very simple to pull out & will save you bulk swearing & blood shed.......

Just an opinion... I'd give it a go setting shims up if you brought one to me. I used to frequent workshops setting shims up on mainly Toyota's a few years ago, it's amazing how many mechanics are daunted by a job like that.. 2AZ camrys are a fun one.. no shims, got to replace the whole bucket. V8 landcruisers are another fun one too.. Subys are a pleasure to work on..
