Default White exhaust blades on turbo.

I replaced the standard td04 from my 01 bugeye with a brand new td04l today in the hope it would fix my grey smoke under full bost problem.

What I noticed about the old turbo was that the exhaust blades. They are super white and the surrounding exhaust housing is black.

Does this mean my car is running lean? Could this be becuase of my pod filter or cat back exhaust?

Many thanks for your turbo wisdom.

that seems to look like you are running very lean... If you have a oiled pod filter, it may have screwed with your afm, which could possibly cause lean mixtures. I seem to remember you were running a HKS Pod right?... If memory serves me right, it is an oiled type pod filter.

Take your spark plugs out and have a look at them too. If they have turned white like the turbine blades... then you have a problem.

If your spark plugs are white... Change them and get another AFM and put the standard air box back in... See how you go then...

On Another note... What is the difference between a normal TD04 and a TD04L?

thanks for clearing that up joe, they look identical except the new turbo has thicker coolant lines than the old 01 version.

I cant take out the plugs to have a look as they have a plastic plug on the end and I cant get good enough light to see whats going on there. I had a look at the afm though and its completely dry and free of oil, there was only a few specks of dust and these blew off by blowing on it. Just out of interest, how much are bugeye afms from subaru? if they are under 200 bucks Ill get one just too be safe.

While i was getting my TBE put on - i was told my exhaust blades where white like that too.. Only mod i had was a bigger top mount, which may have effected it.
Mines a bug eye too.. Will be chucking it on the dyno mid/end of this week to see AFR and go from there.

good stuff mate, I was thinking the white turbine blades might have been from the fact that they must get so damn hot and just incinerate any oil or anything on them. I wasnt sure though.

was hoping people might have had some experience with removing turbos and white blades to see if this is normal.

Might get them to check my plugs at the next service.

White residue on anything related to the combustion process is not good.
