Default Engine Oil : Recommendations???

Hi all. It's come to the time again when the oil and filter change is due. I have been using Mobil 1 and changing the oil and filter every 5k. Trouble is the Mobil 1 (although I think it's a fantastic product) I've been using is a bit pricey and I was wondering if there are any cheaper, but as good quality oils out there.......
What do you guys use/recomend???

P.S. While we are on with the oil subject I am thinking of changing the gearbox oil to Redline. I want ultimate protection as I am always thinking the gearbox might blow up when i'm driving hard. What do you recommend.

Cheers in advance.........

SC TER.

MotorSport: (The really good stuff)
ELF HTX 15w-50 @ $180ish 5litres
Motul 300v Competition 15w-50 (4l+1litre) for $110ish @ Auto One
Mobil 1 15w50

Track/Hard Street Driven:
Elf Excellium GP 10w50 $55
Motul 300V Chrono 10W/40 (2l+2l+2l) = $140 ish

Performance Street Driven:
Mobil Syn S 10W/40
Elf Competition GT 10W/40 semi syn $40 @ nrgauto.com.au

If you pick your timing Auto One or Supercheap have 20% off sales occasionaly, but you prob know that already.

Nothing Less than 10w40 in Subaru's for big end protection period.

When you say nothing less than 10w40 do you mean the 0 or the 40? Cos some companies do 0w40 and other 10w30???

stick to mobil1 engine oil dude, its worth it. I run it in my engine, change it every 5k's, I'd think that u would care for your engine more than u would your gearbox .

Nothing Less in the weighting ??w/?? - (Viscosity) of the oil.

ie do not use 5w/50 or 0w/40 because as the oil temperature rises the oil will become too thin to provide protection for the engine. 15w/40...15w/50 is much better.

As for gearbox protection:

Redline Lightweight Shockproof Geal Oil a.k.a. SMURF SNOT
$120 for 1 gallon at last check.

And for all of you using Mobil 1 5w/50 . . . this is NOT a fully synthetic oil. (ok for GRANDMA STREET ONLY WRX drivers)
It is chock a block full of viscosity modifiers. The modifiers are the very first part of the oil to break down when oil temps start to rise

Grab some Castrol R 10W60 fully synthetic for the same price.
