Go and have a talk to the workshops around town. The number of GC8 (pre 00) WRX's and Forrestor's in their shops at the moment with engine problems, should make you seriously think twice about putting a thin oil in your ageing EJ20 engine. If you really have to go Mobil get Mobil Syn S 10w40.

The trouble with everyone posting their favorite oil on this forum is that no-one is specific enough.

ie Model(Year) of EJ20/207/257 Engine.
Number of KM on Engine.
Street Driven or Occasional Track Work.
Summer/Winter grade oils. (Viscosity)

Until you lot start posting specifics, most recommendations are complete and utter F&^**ing bullshit.

Rant off.
Read this thread.

you make a fair point there, as darkm00s3 has a EJ22

Na I don't, that was back when I had money & a mechanic was making those decisions.

I'm no expert on the topic but the gist I get, is there'll always be a more suited oil for specific applications eg track, summer, winter, car age, engine size. But the 10/30 is a good all round oil, gives you decent cold start protection without being too thick.

True.

Engine: EJ22
KM: Roughly about 50k since the build
Use: Pretty much Track and Cruises, not much 'daily driving'
History: Last person to own it ran 5w50 in it for pretty much as long as they had it and never had any problems, neither have i, cept for my engine burning the oil pretty quickly . Change it every 5k. I like Tall Dark haired women, though i have been known to go for a few short blondes. Some guys also tickle my fancy though only if they are dark haired and fairly tall. Is that enough info for you

I would only run 10w or thicker in any engine, 15w if always driving it hard in the summer on a 40deg day, 10w for normal driving. I dont know of many cars, that reccomend to run 0w or 5w oil and have good engine life, especially in australian summers.

Regards,

Tom

Does changing the engine oil from a 5w to a 10w from say winter to summer, have any adverse effect on the engine?

Also reading the engine oil article article: http://www.aa1car.com/library/motor_oil_605.htm

It says that oils like 5w-50 take care of both ends of the temp range...so is a 10w necessary? Just wondering, as I have Mobil1 5w-50 in the STi at the moment.

Im sure this thread has been done a few times now

FWIW:
Model(Year) of EJ20/207/257 Engine. MY97 EJ20
Number of KM on Engine. 165K kms (I am the 2nd owner and bought it at 90K 3 years ago)
Street Driven or Occasional Track Work. Mainly street driven, lots of cruises and about 12 "events" (mc training days, hillclimbs, 3 sessions at WAW)
Oil used. Castrol R (5-30w i think) for about 40K kms and since then i used the Motul Turbo light (10-40w i think).

Other than a super dirty car, a replaced alarm and clutch, i've had 4 problems with the car in the 3 years i've owned it. 2 radiator hoses which made a mess, an exhaust leak and a cam seal leak after a well known workshop used only 3 genuine seals, instead of 5 when they did the 100K service. I dont think im doing too badly!

Changing the fluids etc between 5 and 7.5K kms seems to be working so far for me

However, my dads car (MY99 with 110K on the clock) has had similiar treatment with similiar oils etc (according to the dealer he bought it off) and is on his 3rd engine and has cost the dealer well over 20K in parts / labour

Every car and situation is different. Look at Morgans gearbox. 400 hard launches and its only just broken now, while others are breaking them a lot sooner..
