When i first did it i kept a platic bag in the car , when it was parked i just placed it over the air filter, didnt really suck up that much water when i was in motion. The other option is to buy one of those pod heat sheilds and turn it around so the water doesnt get in. But then that restricts the air flow as well.

Like I said I have never had them on and thats right through winter aswell. However I have a K&N pannel in the STD airbox so unlike those of you with pods the water does not worry me. I would imagine that the water would become a lot more of an issue if you are running a pod.

y bother opening them, for the amount of airflow i dont think its worth the worry of damage.

the vents serve no purpose on a street car apart from pressurising the engine bay and the rear of the radiator thus reducing the air flow through it- anyone who wants to datalog it should do so, i found that air temps were between 4-7 degrees cooler with a full GX bonnet, vs the WRX bonnet.

Last time I went over the pits the Inspectors picked on my vent covers. I didn't have any installed at the time and they wouldn't pass me without them.

Apparently they are there to keep dust/dirt etc to a minimum and any hazardous small objects away from the belts etc.
