As an aside (but somewhat relevant), can someone please post the different sizes w/h/l and vol of various model stock intercoolers (eg. 97/98, 99/00, 01+ wrx & sti TMIC's). This was posted on the previous server but has been lost.

It might be useful for comparison to aftermarket TMIC for those thinking of upgrading, or those thinking of upgrading to a newer model stock TMIC.

Cheers
Richard

99/00 Bar and Plate MRT TMIC = AU$1,421.28 (2003 price)
IMHO they look the same as Hyperflow and are priced similar?
Following specs are for the vanilla model WRX's TMIC cores in cm/ MRT B&P

91/96 OE 11.5 x 39 x 6.5 MRT=15.5 x 39 x 11.5
97/98 OE 14.5 x 36.5 x 6.5 MRT=16 x 38 x 11.5
99/00 OE*14 x 37 x 6 MRT=15 x 38.5 x 11.5
01/02 OE 16.5 x 38 x10 MRT=19 x 48 x 11.5

*Keep in mind the MY99 onwards had twice as many fins as its predecessors making it more efficient.

I was wandering what which is more ideal - tube and fin or bar and plate?

Sorry for the newbie-ish question

Borrowing Stace's knowledge, t&f is better apparently, but also more pricey.

they say tube and fin has quicker and more efficient cooling. the thing is, the fins can bend very easily

cars come factory with a tube and fin,

advantage is that they dont need to be as thick (hence lighter) to acheive the same cooling efficency.

B&P flow more and imho are better suited as a TMIC. T&F suit a FMIC as they present less of an air flow restriction. T&F are cheaper, thats why they are OEM. Out of curiosity what do SWRT use ?
Heres a quote from the Hyperflow site: http://www.hyperflow.com.au/techmons.htm

The benchmark for pressure drop on the WRX has been the Hyperflow TMIC it outflows the Subaru STi TMIC by 19%. It has out flowed every WRX Intercooler (ours and competitors) we have tested.

Please note, it is rarely seen that any FMIC can even match the standard STi TMIC for flow.

would anyone know if the hyperflow tmic for a 01 will fit in a my99? seems like the 01 hyperflow is much bigger than the 99 hyperflow.

can i make it fit with modification?

Generally speaking it can be done...its only money Needs the bonnet scoop changed as well to take advantage of the extra size. To get the benefits you need to get the air flow through it. Lots of discussions on Rexnet on your options.

Usually people just go a later model I/C because they are bigger and economical to purchase.

hm.. yea. i'm aware that bigger the scoop will increase cooling efficiency, also have to get a larger rubber seal to cover the larger tmic.

but i'm more concern about if the 01 hyperflow will actually fit into the my99 without relocating anything, or hitting the firewall etc. thot about the GD wrx tmic but i prefer something bigger

does anyone know if the GD sti tmic is bigger than the GD wrx tmic? if so, by how much?
